Hardway History - Cockles & Winkles @1936

Memory from Jill Smith, Gosport

“I was born at 125 Priory Road in 1936; this was my Grandmother’s house.

My Grandfather used to collect cockles and winkles to sell to local residents to supplement his Naval pension.

In later life my Grandmother moved to No 4 Priory Road, opposite Quay Lane, which was just a sort of track straight down to the water.  At the end of the lane on the left, was a pig farm and on the right, was what I think was an orchard and a couple of cottages.

Mr Hunt used to come to our house in Findon Road to teach me to play piano, early 1940.”
